French Cuckoo Marans are heritage, dual purpose chickens. The Marans breed originates from a town called Marans, France. Its a very winter hardy breed with a docile temperament. They are more athletic and take to foraging and free ranging more often than other breeds. French Cuckoo Marans are very attractive birds.
The cuckoo pattern is very much like a barred pattern like on a Barred Rock. However, the barring or the delineation between the black and white stripes is smudged in the Cuckoo pattern. The color effect is smokey and blurred. Hens are much darker over all than the roosters. Roosters are striking and chivalrous, with an upright and tall stance. They have bright red combs and large wattles.
French Feather Legged Cuckoo Maran roosters are much lighter with a lot higher percentage of white feathers than the females. French Cuckoo Marans have feathering up the outside of their legs. Some birds may not have the leg feathering, but they do carry the gene for reproduction. Beyond being beautiful additions to the flock, these Marans will also add beautiful, dark brown eggs to your collection. Eggs are darkest when they start laying and begin to fade a little in color as they age.
