The Barnevelder chicken comes from the Barneveld region of Holland and is known for the dark chocolate brown eggs they produce. These beautiful birds have a single red comb with small wattles and earlobes. Hens and roosters both have yellow legs and skin. Barnevelder females have unique partridge-colored feathers that are in an arrowhead pattern that resembles a lacing pattern. Males do not have the lacing feather pattern. They are very personable and make great pet chickens. They are also good mothers and are very attentive to their chicks. You can expect your Barnevelder to lay around 3-4 eggs a week even in the winter months. The Barnevelder is considered a rare breed in the United States which makes them highly desirable. They are slow to mature but make a good dual-purpose breed.
